Today I am starting a series on one of the most important positional topics: piece exchanges. My research suggests that these often represent major turning points in tournament games on the 1600-2000 level. It’s possible to make any number of generalizations on the topic, but I think the real learning is going to come from making the same types of decisions you need to make over the board: To trade, or not to trade?
We will start with a position from the game between James Zaupa and Ha Herold, from the 2025 Arco Open in Italy. White has just played 13.Rf1-e1, bringing up the position in the game.
What would you play for Black? Even if you aren’t sure, try to pick a move. Analysis coming in a couple of days!
