EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Ian Harris is the Executive Director of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation. Ian brings almost two decades of coaching experience and a lifelong passion for chess to his work with students of every level.
Shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County—where he competed on the school’s powerhouse chess team—Ian earned the title of National Master.
He went on to take a lead role as manager of the Chess Club of Fairfield County, where for over 10 years he coached hundreds of students ranging from complete novices to 2100-rated experts.
In 2020 Ian founded his own chess teaching organization, RedBandit Chess, and has since been twice named Connecticut State Chess Association Coach of the Year. Ian also currently serves as Head Coach of the Sacred Heart University chess team. As a USCF Senior Tournament Director, Ian has organized well over 650 rated and unrated events since 2010.
In addition to teaching his own classes, from 2022 to 2024, Ian served as Programs Manager for the National Scholastic Chess Foundation.
Whether guiding a one-on-one lesson, teaching a school class, or preparing a competitor for a serious tournament, Ian not only brings his expertise but his genuine enthusiasm for the game. It is this passion that has driven him to keep elevating his own play, reaching a peak rating of 2364 and earning three Connecticut State Championship titles.
Off the board, Ian enjoys playing the piano, tennis, and spending time with family and friends. He and his wife, Melissa, live in Norwalk, Connecticut with their two young children.
