Defending Puzzle: Passed Pawn

Defending a Theoretical B vs. N Ending

Today, I just want to give you a position to think about!

I am currently working on a problem book for club players with Thinkers Publishing, along with my co-author, International Master Robert Shlyakhtenko. For this process, we are working through a great deal of games where both players are rated 1500-2000, and have created a database filled with instructive positions and excerpts.

The following position is from the ‘passed pawn’ category. Many games are decided by executing – and defending against – some of the tactical opportunities that can arise from having an advanced passed pawn.

ex-post-2-1

This theoretical ending arose in a game between Martinez Garay and Lanzilotta, in the 7th Marcel Duchamp Cup. Black has just played 65…Ne5, as indicated in the diagram.
