Parkridge Christian Academy CHESS – Third Session

Wednesday Class:  8 weeks beginning March 30, 2022
SKU: N/A Category:

For over 2500 years chess has provided a fun learning experience for students of all ages and abilities. The National Scholastic Chess Foundation’s after-school enrichment programs at Parkridge Christian Academy are tailored to accommodate students of different strengths within the same class. With a balance of structured lessons and supervised play, our students improve their ability to focus, to create and implement plans, and to adapt their thinking when circumstances change. Along the way, they are introduced to the game’s rich history, they learn to win and lose with grace, and to achieve their goals by persevering through adversity.

Level 1 classes: Our beginners will start by learning piece names, values and movements, the rules of chess and how to record their games. Once students have mastered these beginning concepts, they learn how to select good moves, avoid common mistakes and unforced errors. They look at the role of pawns and examine different pawn structures. The course continues with introducing key tactics (pins, forks battering rams and discovered attacks).

Level 2 classes: Students who have already mastered the basics proceed to Level 2 classes. In this series, students will focus on three of the four criteria for evaluating positions: material, mobility and, especially, king safety. They further learn how to create and sustain a direct attack on the opponent’s king. Students will also study in detail one of the classic attacking games of all time.

$20 per class for 8 weeks.
